Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving (CERAD) Theory Practice Exam Prep

Reversing on the carriageway is prohibited on a motorway due to the significant risks it poses to all road users. Motorways are designed for high-speed travel with traffic flowing in one direction, and any attempt to reverse would create an immediate hazard, leading to potential accidents. Trained emergency response drivers must know that the safety of themselves and others is paramount, and reversing in such high-traffic situations is extremely dangerous.

Using the hard shoulder, when safe and necessary, is permitted for emergencies or breakdowns, while entering the central reservation is also not allowed for safety reasons. Pursuing a vehicle in reverse is akin to reversing on the carriageway in terms of danger and is equally prohibited. Understanding the rules of motorway use is crucial for maintaining safety and efficiency on these high-speed roads.
